There are many reasons why ice hockey training now includes dry land training. Only a few are natural born goal scorers though.

My guess is that you too want to lead the league in scoring sometime and therefore I will give you a few tips on how you can improve your own hockey game and become a more frequent goal scorer.

To lead the league in scoring might be setting your personal goals too high though.

Goals should be set high, but they should always be realistic too. You must believe and feel that you have a chance achieving your goals.

Just take a few minutes to think about what kind of ice hockey player you are:

- If you are a natural scorer and feel that you can win a scoring title that should definitely be your goal for the season.

- If you're not a natural goal scorer, maybe your goal should be to score ten, twenty or thirty goals.

Knowing what kind of hockey player you are will make it easier for you to set realistic goals for yourself.

I say it again, because it is important:

Goals should always be realistic and you can very well divide your main goal into smaller steps.

For example, your goal could be to score five or eight goals every month. Making these goals will give you a good feeling about yourself and you can easily measure what you are achieving.

Off ice hockey training is becoming more popular among youth players in recent years, but many players of all ages still ignore this critical aspect of training. Elite players have always trained off-ice, as they and their coaches understand the benefits that dry land training can have. Here are three reasons you can't afford to leave dry-land out of your development.

1) Dry land training improves muscular endurance, speed, power and agility without the need for ice time.

Dry land gives you an opportunity to work on critical areas of your game even when you're not on the ice. While the movements are different on the ground than on the ice, the benefits are the same. Dry land training like running and plyometrics help you build speed, endurance, power and agility, any time of year, whether you have access to ice or not.

2) Ice time isn't cheap. Dry land training can cost you nothing.

Ice time is very expensive. Even in a town with an abundance of rinks, ice rental will usually run at least $100 an hour. Simply relying on your team's ice time to get your conditioning in won't give you enough opportunity to train, and it can be very expensive to purchase extra time. 3) Sticking to an off-ice routine will make you more disciplined during your on-ice training.

Dry-land training can be gruelling, and many players hate it compared to on-ice practices. This means that if you can stick to your dry-land routine, not only will you improve your skills and your physical fitness, but you'll also get more out of your on-ice practices.

Dedicated training and nutrition are important at any level if a player wants to improve, and for any player that wants to reach the top of their game, dry land training is an absolute must.

Off-Ice Hockey Training For Children - How Is It Different From Off-Ice Training For Adults?


Ice hockey training for children is different in many ways than hockey training for teenagers or adults. It makes perfect sense on the ice; children's games don't have checking, they are protected by mandatory face cages, and the emphasis of their practice is to learn the basic skills needed for hockey - skating and stick-handling. If it makes so much sense on the ice, why not off the ice?

Off-ice training for hockey has been rightly recognized as an integral, vital part in the development and refinement of an ice hockey player. That is also right for children, perhaps even more so; it is at the early age that the hockey-playing child can be led to absorb the work ethics that will accompany him at a later age.

Ice hockey skates vary from figure skates in quite a few areas. Hockey Workouts - 3 Ultimate Core Training Exercises For Ice Hockey Players


Core training in hockey workouts is of the utmost importance. The core is responsible for a lot of things when you're on the ice, including generating power in your shots and hits, and stabilizing you when you skate, shoot, hit, get hit, or do just about anything else. A strong core makes for dominant ice hockey players, whereas a weak one is begging for injuries. Here are 3 of the best exercises you can do to train your core for top performance on the ice.

Reverse Crunch with Swiss Ball

This is a great exercise and very simply to do. The exercise ball is added to make the movement a little more difficult. You can do it without though if you find it too difficult to do with the ball. To perform this exercise, lie on your back and grip a Swiss ball between your fight and calves. Never let the ball touch the ground, hold it just above. Using your core, bring the ball up until your legs are straight above you and your hips are off of the ground.

Swiss Ball Push-up

Again, the Swiss ball is used to add instability which is why this exercise activates the core so effectively. In fact, any time you can add instability into your workout, it will always effectively work your core. To perform the Swiss ball push-up, simply place your hands on an exercise ball and perform a normal push-up movement like you would on the ground. You can also reverse this and place your feet on the ball. Both are great exercises and will rip up your core.

Wood-Chooper

To do this exercise, grab a dumbbell (or alternately use a medicine ball) and holding it with both hands, start with it raised above your left shoulder. Bring it down and across your body until it is beside your right hip (simulating an axe-swing across your body). Repeat until the set is finished and then switch sides and perform the same movement in reverse. This is a great exercise for your core and has huge benefits for shooting.

The Ice Hockey Jersey

Understanding Ice Hockey Statistics


Ice Hockey Stats (shortened for statistics) is a record of the performance of the team and the players. In other words, it shows the standing of the team one is interested at. Many find it hard to understand the statistics since reveals only numbers and abbreviations, the meanings of which are unknown to lay persons. Discussed below are abbreviations used in the records and what do they stand for.

A players statistics include the following abbreviations: G is for goal and A is for assist, which is the total number of scores and assists the player made respectively. PTS is the scoring points determined by adding his goals and assists. PIM stands for Penalties infraction minutes or penalties in minutes, which are the number of penalties called to the player. GP is the number of games the player has entered. TOI indicates the total time he spent playing on the rink. PPG and PPA show the number of goals and assists (respectively) done by the player while his team was on power play. SHG and SHA are for goals and assists accomplished during the time when they are shorthanded (lacking a player). +/- is a sign unique to the players stats and stands for goals scored for the team minus the goals scored against the time for the time the player was on the rink and the teams have the same number of players.

G, A and GP holds the same meaning when one is looking at a goaltenders stats. The number of games he has started is represented by GS. GA stands for goals against, which is the sum of goals against the goaltender and its average is denoted as GAA. W, L, T, and SO are used in the same manner the team stats use it (see below). SOG, or shots on the goal, is the number of goals dealt. SV, or saves, is the total number of shots deflected by the goaltender.

W stands for wins, L is for Losses. GP stands for the number of games played by the team. T is for ties, SOL for shootout losses (which are games lost in shootouts) and OTL is overtime losses. PTL is the abbreviation for points, which is determined by wins, losses, overtime losses, shootout losses and ties. PTS is the tool that matters most to the team since it dictates the current standing of the team. GF and GA are goals for and goals against respectively.

With all these letters flooding the sheets, an amateur can get a rough idea on the standing of a team by looking at the W, L, T, SOL, OTL and PTS. All the others only become useful in breaking ties.

Ice Hockey Betting Rules

Off-Ice Ice Hockey Training Part 2 - Hockey Specific Core Training


There's nothing more frustrating than spending countless hours working toward something, only to realize you haven't made any progress.  Actually, there is one thing: spending countless hours working toward something, only to realize you've actually been progressing in the WRONG direction!  In the world of hockey training, crunches, sit-ups, and partner leg throw-downs predominate as the most utilized forms of core training.  Bad news for players that were actually hoping to improve their performance through training.

I could write a book on the reasons why these exercises are not only poor choices with regards to performance, but are actually dangerous!  In the interest of time, I'll summarize all the arguments against these useless exercises by saying that at no point do you need to rapidly or strongly flex your trunk (think crunch motion) during the game of hockey, and performing these movements over and over reinforce the poor hunched over posture that we spend way too much time in already (sitting at a computer, driving, sitting in a classroom chair, etc.).  

To understand how to best train the core, we need to define the core musculature and its function.  The core includes ALL of the muscles that attach to the hip.  This is an important point.  Only training the abdominals inevitably leads to muscular imbalances and leaves opportunities for improved performance untapped.  The core musculature includes the abdominals, glutes, hip flexors and rotators, all of which should be trained using functional patterns.

The two primary functions of the core are:

1) To create a stable base for extremity (arm and leg) movement

2) Create trunk stiffness for efficient force transfer between the lower and upper body

Both of these functions revolve around controlling pelvic/hip movement.

The core needs to be both stable and reactive, and should be trained in that order.    

Despite the potentially confusing structure and function of the core, the training is pretty straight forward.  To establish a stable core, all hockey players should start with a basic core training circuit involving front planks, side planks, and glute bridges.  Once they can hold each position for 3 sets of 30s with perfect form, they should progress to 1-leg variations to add in a rotation component.

This is when things start to get fun.  There's nothing stable about the game of hockey.  In truth, core stability in an unchallenged environment won't do a whole lot for a hockey player on the ice.  The key is to train the core for reactive stability.  In other words, the core needs to maintain stability while being exposed to some challenging force.  On the ice, this force can from an external source, such as an opposing player, or internally, such as decelerating momentum from a shot.  The key to making a core stability exercise a reactive core stability exercise is to add in a perturbation.  In general, reactive core exercises involve one athlete trying to maintain a position, while another athlete provides slight challenges to this position in the form of taps or pushes.  These exercises are usually performed for time (working up to 30s).  A few examples would be:

Side Plank with Perturbation

Athlete sets up in a side plank position with his top hand reaching straight up.  Partner lightly taps the athlete's hand, while the athlete resists any movement.

Hockey Stick Partner Perturbation

Athlete stands in an athletic position holding a hockey stick in front of himself.  The partner lightly taps the stick in all different directions while the athlete resists any movement.

Overhead Hockey Stick Partner Perturbation

Athlete stands in an athletic position holding a hockey stick straight overhead  The partner lightly taps the stick in all different directions while the athlete resists any movement.

The latter two exercises can all be performed from a half-kneeling (lunge position) or tall-kneeling position (kneeling on both knees and getting as tall as possible).  To increase the challenge even further, the athlete performing the exercise can close his eyes.  This really challenges the body's sensory system.

The next progression is into explosive medicine ball throws, to really train the core force transfer function.  Before you transition from resisting movement to creating it, you need to know which areas to move from to maximize force transfer and minimize injury risk.  As a general statement, you want to move at the hips and thoracic spine (think moving through your chest area), and minimize ALL movement around the lumbar spine (or low back).  This is true for both linear movements (bending forward, backward or side to side), and rotational movements.  Once you understand where to move, you're ready to progress to throwing around some medicine balls.  My favorite two medicine ball exercises are:

Overhead Floor Slams

Hold a medicine ball directly over your head.  Then slam it straight down into the ground in front of your feet as hard as possible.  Catch it on the rebound, rapidly return it to the overhead position, then slam it again...and again...and again.

Side Standing Shot Put

Stand facing perpendicular to the wall.  Load the ball in front of your back shoulder with your back elbow raised even with the ball.  Drive off your back leg and throw the ball as hard as you can using a punching motion.  Catch the ball on the rebound, rapidly return to the start position and throw it again.  Switch sides and repeat.  

Most medicine ball exercises are best performed between 8 and 12 reps.  Any more than that and the movements lose their power.

The final core training progression is to incorporate reactive stability into explosive medicine ball throws.  The way to do this is to perform a couple explosive throws, catch the ball and freeze in a position while a partner provides a perturbation.  For example, if you were performing the overhead floor slam, you would perform 2-3 reps, then catch the ball and hold it overhead while a partner lightly tapped the ball for 5-10s while you resisted all movement.  Then you'd perform 2-3 more slams, and repeat the overhead perturbation, cycling through this process 2-4 times.  This type of training will have the maximal carryover to on ice performance, as you're alternating between explosive power and reactive stability.

For hockey players to get the most benefit from their core training, they should begin with basic core stability exercises before progressing to reactive stability exercises.  After spending some time working at these, players can advance to explosive medicine ball exercises and then to advanced exercises incorporating explosive movements with reactive stability holds.  Following this progression will help guarantee that off-ice core training leads to on-ice improvements in performance.

If you think taking care of your ice skates does not take much time, you would be wrong. Like anything else, the more you take care of it, the longer it will last.

If you do not take care of skates, you could find they no longer usable in a very short time. When you exit the ice surface, put skate guards over the blades. These guards protect the metal blades from dirt and other things that can dull them.

The box drill is a great one because it has you jumping back, forth and side to side. For this one, set up four rings (or any kinds of markets) in a box pattern. Stand in the first ring (or on the first marker) and with your feet kept together, jump from one market to another, never stopping in between, until you've completed the entire box. Once again, never keep your feet on the ground.
